Actor Yemi Solade reveals he cursed his pastor for asking him to reject movie roles on Sundays

Veteran Nollywood actor, Yemi Solade, has opened up about a major fallout with his former church after being told to stop taking film jobs on Sundays.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, the 64-year-old actor recalled how the demand pushed him away from church attendance back in 2013.

According to him, church leaders insisted Sundays must be strictly for worship, but he found it unrealistic for someone in the entertainment industry.

“I’d been told in the church that I should tell producers not to call me for work on Sundays. And I cursed the pastor,” Solade said.

He explained that acting was his livelihood, and stopping work on Sundays could have ruined his career.

“There’s no way in the Bible that Sunday in the Greco-Roman calendar was set aside for people to gather. You’re telling me not to leave my house and go to where my chop is. You want to ruin my career?” he added.

The actor said leaving church activities brought him more peace than when he was attending services regularly.

“Rather, I have peace. I do well. Because every day of my life, when I was going to church, I got disturbances,” he said.

Solade also narrated how a technician once diverted part of his money to church offerings, joking that the blessing from that giving should rightfully come back to him.

Beyond religion, he challenged the popular belief that Nollywood began with the 1992 film Living in Bondage, insisting earlier productions like Ade Ajiboye’s Shosho Meji (1988) and TV dramas such as Things Fall Apart in the 1980s were the true roots of the industry.

He further argued that theatre education came late to the South-East, noting that when he was a Theatre Arts student at Obafemi Awolowo University, no Eastern university had a drama department participating in national theatre festivals.

Yemi Solade, known for his outspoken views, has been in the industry for over four decades, starring in Yoruba and English-language films.
